Mississauga Garbage Collection,
Decoded for 2026

Your garbage still belongs to Peel Region. Your recycling does not — it changed hands on January 1, 2026, and nobody sent you a letter about it. Here's the schedule, the bin sizes, and the phone number that actually works.

📅 Updated: August 2026⏱ Reflects the January 1, 2026 recycling transfer💰 Source: Peel Region & Circular Materials

Waste collection in Mississauga is not one service. It is now three services with two different owners, and the split happened quietly at the start of this year.

Peel Region still collects your garbage, your organics and your yard waste. Your recycling is collected by GFL Environmental under contract to Circular Materials, a national not-for-profit that took over the program on January 1, 2026. Your bins did not change. Your collection days did not change. What changed is who is responsible when something goes wrong — and if you call Peel Region about a missed recycling pickup, they cannot help you.

💡 The short version

Garbage every other week, organics every single week, recycling on the weeks garbage is not collected. Peel handles garbage, organics and yard waste. Circular Materials and GFL handle recycling — including missed pickups and damaged blue bins. Labour Day falls on Monday, September 7, 2026, so collection that week runs one day late.

Section 01 · The Schedule

Your 2026 Collection Schedule

Peel Region · most curbside households in Mississauga

The thing that confuses people about Peel's schedule is that it is not a weekly cycle with things dropped in. It is a two-week cycle, and organics is the only stream that appears in both weeks.

StreamHow oftenWho collects it
Organics (green bin)Every weekPeel Region
GarbageEvery other weekPeel Region
Recycling (blue bin)Every other weekGFL, for Circular Materials
Yard wasteSeasonalPeel Region

So the two-week pattern looks like this: in week one you set out garbage and organics. In week two you set out recycling and organics. Garbage and recycling never go out on the same day, which is why a household that forgets which week it is on tends to alternate between overflowing and half-empty.

There is a simple recovery if you have lost track: whichever bin you put out last week, put out the other one this week. Peel gave that exact advice during the January changeover, and it works for the same reason all year — the two streams strictly alternate.

⚠️ Your recycling day vanished from Peel's calendar

Because recycling moved to Circular Materials, it no longer appears in Peel Region's online collection calendar, and it dropped out of Peel's phone, text and email reminders. Your recycling schedule itself did not change — only the place you look it up. Circular Materials has said it plans to make a waste reminder app available to Peel residents.

Section 02 · The Handover

What Actually Changed on January 1

Extended Producer Responsibility · a provincial mandate, not a Peel decision

This was not Peel Region outsourcing a service to save money. It was the Province of Ontario moving the entire cost of recycling off municipalities and onto the companies that create the packaging.

The model is called Extended Producer Responsibility. Under it, producers — the businesses that put recyclable packaging into the market — are responsible for fully funding and managing recycling programs. Ontario has been rolling this out municipality by municipality, and Peel's turn came on January 1, 2026. The same change is happening across the province.

Because January 1 is a statutory holiday, there was no collection that day. GFL's first recycling collection in Peel ran on Friday, January 2, 2026.

Peel residents got the mild version of this transition. Some Ontario municipalities moved from weekly to bi-weekly recycling, and others were switched from open recycling boxes to large wheeled carts. In Peel, residents kept the same containers and the same collection schedule. The practical change for most households is a phone number.

Section 03 · Who Owns the Problem

Who to Call When It Goes Wrong

The single most useful table on this page

Calling the wrong organisation is the main way people lose a week over this. Peel Region cannot collect your recycling, cannot repair your blue bin, and cannot look up your recycling day.

If you are unhappy about the change itself, neither number is the right one. The decision was provincial legislation, so Circular Materials directs residents to contact their local Member of Provincial Parliament.

Section 04 · The Bins

Bin Sizes and What Actually Fits

Peel Region · three garbage sizes, one organics size

Peel offers three garbage bin sizes. Since garbage is only collected every second week, the size you choose has to cover fourteen days, not seven — which is the calculation most households get wrong when they first move in.

BinCapacityHolds
Small garbage120 L / 32 gal1–2 bags
Medium garbage240 L / 64 gal3–4 bags
Large garbage360 L / 95 gal4–5 bags
Organics100 L / 22 galOne size for every household

Households on bag-based collection rather than carts work to a different rule: up to four garbage bags or four full containers at the curb on your garbage day. Anything beyond that has to go out in a black bag with a garbage tag attached. Individual bags have to weigh under 20 kg, and rigid containers have to hold under 125 L.

The weight limit is the one that catches people out after a renovation or a heavy clear-out. A bag of wet plaster or tile hits 20 kg long before it looks full, and an overweight bag simply gets left at the curb.

Section 05 · Holidays

Holiday Collection, and the Next Day That Moves

Labour Day · Monday, September 7, 2026

Peel does not collect waste on statutory holidays, and it does not skip your week either. Collection slides.

The standard rule is that collection runs one day later for the rest of that week. If your normal day is Monday, you go out Tuesday; if it is Thursday, you go out Friday. The Community Recycling Centres are closed on the holiday itself and reopen the next day.

Labour Day 2026 falls on Monday, September 7. Every collection day that week shifts back by one. The Christmas period is the exception to the one-day rule: with no pickup on December 25 or 26, collection that week runs two days later.

📅 The three shifts worth putting in your calendar

Labour Day — Monday, September 7, 2026, collection one day later that week. Christmas — no collection December 25 or 26, two days later that week. New Year's Day — no collection January 1, one day later that week.

Section 06 · The Money

The $11.6 Million Question

If producers now pay for recycling, where did the savings go?

This is the reasonable question a resident asks on hearing that recycling is no longer taxpayer-funded, and Peel has answered it directly.

Peel's blue box program officially transitioned in October 2024, ahead of the January 2026 handover of the wider program. The region has been preparing since the change was first announced in 2019, and it booked the savings in stages as they arrived:

Budget yearAnnual net operating saving
2022$2.8 million
2024$1.5 million
2025$7.3 million
Total$11.6 million

So the money is real and it has already been counted. What it did not do is arrive as a line item reducing your bill. The savings were applied inside Peel's operating budgets in the years shown, which offsets upward pressure rather than cutting the amount you pay — and Mississauga property taxes still rose 5.21% in 2026.

That is not a contradiction, and it is worth understanding rather than resenting: an $11.6 million saving sits against a regional budget funded by the Peel share of every property tax bill in Mississauga, Brampton and Caledon. It restrains the increase; it was never going to reverse it. If you want to see how the regional share reaches your own bill, our 2026 property tax breakdown splits the bill by levy and by ward.

Section 07 · Overflow

When You Have More Than Fits

Extra recycling, and the free drop-off most people forget

A two-week recycling cycle after a birthday, a delivery-heavy month or a flat-pack furniture build will beat a blue bin.

Circular Materials asks residents to put everything inside the bin as part of proper set-out, and to hold extra material until the next pickup. Where a household genuinely needs more capacity, additional cart requests are handled through a needs assessment process it manages. During the changeover it also signalled a two-month transition period for extra recycling placed outside bins in January and February.

If holding it for two weeks is not realistic, Peel's Community Recycling Centres accept recycling drop-off free of charge, provided you are bringing recycling items only. Two of the six are in Mississauga:

Fewster CRC1126 Fewster Dr., Mississauga
Brampton CRC395 Chrysler Dr., Brampton
Heart Lake CRC420 Railside Dr., Brampton
Bolton CRC109 Industrial Rd., Bolton
Caledon CRC1795 Quarry Dr., Caledon

Check hours before driving over, and remember the free rate applies to recycling drop-off — other material brought to a CRC can attract a fee.

Section 08 · Townhouses

If You Live in a Townhouse, Read This Part

The one group whose schedule genuinely changed

Most of Mississauga kept its collection pattern through the handover. Townhouse residents on weekly recycling did not.

Townhome recycling moved to Circular Materials with everyone else's, and GFL collects it in the same way, still in bags. But townhouses that had weekly recycling collection have moved to bi-weekly — every other week, in line with the rest of the region. Circular Materials has indicated it may revisit this. Townhouse garbage is unaffected and continues to be collected weekly by Peel Region.

There is a second change worth knowing before you request a replacement. As of January 1, new and replacement recycling bins are available in the large 360 L / 95 gal size. Circular Materials is exploring medium bins, and small bins are not being supplied. If a small bin suits your space and yours is still serviceable, that is an argument for keeping it rather than swapping it.

Section 09 · Checklist

Your Checklist

Before Labour Day, Monday September 7
  • 1
Save the GFL number, not Peel's, for recycling. 1-877-268-4351, or the form at gflenv.com/canadarecycles. Peel Region cannot action a recycling complaint.
  • 2
Move your collection day one day later the week of September 7. Labour Day is a Monday, so every day that week shifts.
  • 3
Get your recycling calendar from Circular Materials. It is no longer in Peel's calendar or reminder notifications, at circularmaterials.ca/peelregion.
  • 4
Size your garbage bin for fourteen days. Collection is every other week, so a small 120 L bin is two bags of capacity per fortnight.
  • 5
Keep bags under 20 kg. Overweight bags get left, and renovation debris hits the limit while the bag still looks half full.
  • 6
Use Battleford or Fewster for recycling overflow. Drop-off is free when you bring recycling only, rather than paying for extra capacity you need twice a year.

Collection details reflect Peel Region and Circular Materials guidance current at August 2026. Schedules vary by address — confirm yours on Peel's collection calendar for garbage, organics and yard waste, and with Circular Materials for recycling. Programs and contractors can change; this page is general information, not advice for a specific property.
