Tip: This calculation matrix builds an essential safety net framework. It excludes elective dining, entertainment, clothing, and discretionary lifestyle components.
Data Sources & Integrity: Transit parameters mirror the official 2026 MiWay Fare Strategy. Rental baseline figures aggregate purpose-built urban development registries. Utilities model standard residential multi-season consumption behaviors inside the Region of Peel service limits.
How this cost of living estimate is built
Most cost-of-living tools apply a national average and a city multiplier, which is how Mississauga ends up described as though it were interchangeable with Hamilton or Ottawa. This one starts from the rates Mississauga households are actually billed.
The line that decides the answer
Housing dominates every Mississauga budget, and the figures here come from asking rents read 14 September 2026: a city-wide average of $2,300 a month, ranging from about $2,032 in Port Credit to $2,499 in Meadowvale.
Owners should substitute their own mortgage payment and add property tax at 1.087901% of MPAC assessed value, which the property tax estimator will work out precisely.
Four separate bills, four separate rulebooks
A Mississauga household is billed by Alectra for electricity, Enbridge for gas, Peel Region for water and wastewater, and an ISP for internet. Each is set by a different body, and only some of them are negotiable.
The Peel bill also carries a stormwater charge of $64.45 to $219.13 a year that does not exist in most Ontario cities. The utilities guides break down every line at current rates.
A gap of more than $13,000 a year
Transport is where Mississauga budgets diverge most sharply. A MiWay monthly pass is $145; running a car in this city costs at least $16,000 a year once insurance, fuel, parking, maintenance and depreciation are all counted.
That single choice moves a household budget more than any grocery strategy will. The MiWay vs driving calculator tests it against a specific commute.
An estimate, not a household budget
The index covers recurring essentials. It does not model childcare — which under the CWELCC fee cap can still be one of the largest lines a family carries — nor debt servicing, savings, or the irregular costs that make up a real year.
For childcare, see the Mississauga childcare cost guide. For the wider question of what income the city demands, the affordability index goes further.
Housing and transport decide almost the entire spread between one Mississauga household and another — the gap between a transit pass and a car is larger than most families' annual grocery bill.
Sources & assumptions
- Asking rents: Zumper, read 14 September 2026 (Tier 2, attributed estimates)
- City of Mississauga — By-law 0061-2026 residential tax rate; stormwater charge rates effective April 1, 2026
- Alectra, Enbridge and Peel Region — approved 2026 rates; MiWay — 2026 fare schedule
- Estimates describe a typical household at each setting. Your own bills will vary with usage, building type and household size.
- Correction · Corrected 20 September 2026. The 1-bedroom and 2-bedroom housing baselines were hand-typed as $1,972 and $2,323 and were not picked up by the 14 September 2026 rent re-read, because this tool did not draw on the site’s rent registry. The 2-bedroom had drifted 5.9% below the published city median. Both now read from the registry, so they move with every future refresh.
