How to Cut Your Internet & Mobile Bill in Mississauga
The average Mississauga household spends $155–$180 a month on home internet plus one phone line — roughly $1,900–$2,160 a year. A rule change that landed in June 2026 just made it far easier to cut that. Here's how.
Internet and mobile are among the easiest recurring bills in Mississauga to overpay on — and, as of this summer, among the easiest to cut. Most households are on an old plan from a big-three provider and have never re-shopped. Here's what things actually cost across the city and the specific moves that lower the bill.
1. An average of ~$62/month — but a huge spread
Mississauga is one of Canada's most competitive internet markets on paper: roughly 49 providers and more than 390 plans serve the city, with the average plan around $62/month and prices running from about $20 to $300. The catch is that most people never leave the incumbent they signed up with. Attributed estimate — comparison sources, July 2026
The gap between a big-provider plan and an independent one on the same physical network is the single biggest saving here. Rogers lists gigabit-plus plans around $100–$130/month; independents delivering comparable speeds over the Bell and Rogers networks come in far lower.
| Plan (illustrative) | Speed | Monthly |
|---|---|---|
| Budget independent (e.g. Odynet) | Entry | from ~$20 |
| TekSavvy — unlimited, no contract | 100 Mbps | ~$38.95 |
| Oxio — incl. free eero router, month-to-month | 100 Mbps | ~$52 |
| TekSavvy — gigabit tier | 1,000–1,500 Mbps | ~$75–$90 |
| Rogers — gigabit-plus | 1,500–2,000 Mbps | ~$100–$130 |

2. Switching fees are gone — and Bell's fibre is open
Two regulatory shifts changed the maths in your favour. First, under CRTC Telecom Regulatory Policy 2026-43, as of June 12, 2026 providers can no longer charge activation, modification or cancellation fees on internet or cellphone plans — nationally expected to unlock about $600 million in yearly savings and push headline prices down an estimated 5–15% over 18 months. Second, since February 2025 the CRTC has required Bell to open its Ontario fibre network to independent providers — so in much of Mississauga you can now get true fibre from a smaller, cheaper ISP. Confirmed — CRTC
The thing that used to stop people switching — a cancellation fee and the hassle — is gone. Leaving a provider mid-cycle costs nothing, which also makes your retention call far more credible.
3. 20 GB+ for $25–$34, if you drop the extras
The cheapest plans in Canada come from prepaid discount brands — Public Mobile, Lucky Mobile, Chatr — which run on the Telus, Bell and Rogers networks but skip storefronts and contracts to keep prices down. Koodo's base plan sits near $19/month, plans with 20 GB or more start around $25, and unlimited-data 5G plans have been seen near $47. Attributed estimate — comparison sources, 2026
Two habits quietly inflate the average Mississauga phone bill: paying for a financed phone baked into the plan (bring-your-own-device plans run $15–$30/month cheaper), and buying 25–50 GB when most Canadians use under 5 GB a month.
| If you want… | Look for | Typical price |
|---|---|---|
| Bare-minimum talk & text | Discount flanker base plan | ~$19 |
| A sensible everyday plan | 20 GB+ BYOD prepaid | ~$25–$34 |
| Heavy data / 5G | Unlimited-data 5G | ~$47+ |
4. What to actually do this month
- Switch internet to an independent ISP on the same Bell/Rogers network. Same speed to your door, lower price, no contract. Often $30–$60/month saved
- Buy your own modem/router instead of renting. $120–$180/year saved
- Move mobile to a BYOD prepaid plan and keep your phone longer. $15–$30/month per line
- Right-size your data. Check your last three bills' actual usage and stop paying for 50 GB you don't touch. Often $10–$25/month
- Make the retention call with leverage: a competitor quote in hand, contract expired, willing to port your number. Retention desks routinely beat advertised rates by 10–30%. $80–$200 per line / year
- Re-shop both every 12 months. Promo rates expire and quietly step up; a yearly check keeps you on the current best price. Recurring

Rough savings vs. good value plans · not a quote
With switching fees now gone, the highest-value hour you can spend this month is moving internet to an independent ISP and your phone to a BYOD plan — a two-line household can routinely save $600–$1,000 a year for the same service.
