Costco Gas in Mississauga: Does the Membership Actually Pay for Itself?
Mississauga has three Costco warehouses. Only two of them sell gas — and if you drive far enough out of your way to reach one, the discount can disappear entirely. Run your own numbers below.
A Gold Star membership costs $55 a year. At a typical 8¢/L discount, a driver burning 1,350 litres a year — roughly 15,000 km in a 9.0 L/100 km vehicle — saves about $108 in fuel. That clears the fee, but only before you account for the drive to get there. Add a 10 km round-trip detour on every fill and roughly a quarter of the saving burns off in the tank on the way.
That is the whole question, and no national finance site can answer it for you, because the answer depends on where in Mississauga you live. Below is the arithmetic, with the detour priced in.
Your break-even, with the detour priced in
Check today's price at your Costco gas bar and at the station you would otherwise use, then enter both. Prices move daily — this tool deliberately publishes none, because any number printed here would be wrong by tomorrow.
Costco Gas Break-Even Calculator
MISSISSAUGAWALLET.CAEnter your numbers above.
This calculator runs entirely in your browser. Nothing you enter is stored, sent or shared. It prices fuel and membership only — it does not value your time, and a detour that costs you 15 minutes a fortnight may not be worth a modest cash win.
Four numbers decide it
The spread. Your annual litres multiplied by the price gap. This is the number every other article stops at, and it is the reason the answer looks obvious when it isn't.
The detour. Every trip to a Costco gas bar that you would not otherwise make burns fuel of its own. The calculator counts your trips (annual litres ÷ fill size), multiplies by the extra round-trip distance, and charges that fuel at the Costco price. A driver making 30 fills a year with a 10 km detour drives an extra 300 km — about 27 litres in a 9.0 L/100 km vehicle, or roughly $44 at 162.9¢/L. Against a $108 gross saving, that is 40% of the win gone.
The membership fee. This only counts against you if fuel is the reason you're buying the membership. If you already shop at Costco, the fee is sunk and every litre is pure gain — which is why the honest answer for most members is different from the answer for someone considering joining for gas alone.
The card. The CIBC Costco Mastercard pays 3% cash back at Costco gas and 2% at other gas stations, with no annual fee. Note the trap: the card's advantage at Costco specifically is one percentage point, not three, because you would have earned 2% filling up anywhere else. On 1,350 litres at an 8¢/L gap, that difference is worth about $20 a year, not $66.
03 / Where the Two Gas Bars AreGeography does most of the work
Mississauga has three Costco warehouses but only two gas bars, and both sit north and east. The S Mississauga warehouse on Laird Road — the one closest to Erin Mills, Clarkson and Sheridan — has a tire centre and propane, but no fuel.
| Warehouse | Address | Gas bar | Closest to |
|---|---|---|---|
| N Mississauga (#526) | 5900 Rodeo Dr, L5R 3S9 | Yes — regular & premium | Heartland, Hurontario, Britannia, Meadowvale |
| C Mississauga (#1169) | 1570 Dundas St E, L4X 1L4 | Yes — regular & premium | Dixie, Applewood, Cooksville, Rathwood |
| S Mississauga (#531) | 3180 Laird Rd, L5L 6A5 | No fuel sold | Erin Mills, Sheridan, Churchill Meadows |
The practical consequence: if you live in Port Credit, Clarkson, Lakeview, Erin Mills, Streetsville or Churchill Meadows, there is no Costco gas bar on your side of the city. Your detour is realistically 12–25 km round trip depending on traffic and route, which is exactly the range where the discount stops covering the drive. Enter your real detour above before assuming Costco is cheaper for you — for a large share of west and lakeshore Mississauga, it is not.
Drivers in Cooksville, City Centre, Dixie and the Heartland corridor are in the opposite position: a detour of 2–6 km, where nearly the whole spread survives.
One more constraint worth knowing before you plan around it: neither Mississauga gas bar sells diesel. Diesel drivers have no Costco option in this city at all.
04 / Access RulesYou need a membership — with one exception
Costco gas bars in Canada are members-only at the pump. The one documented workaround is the Costco Shop Card: only members can buy or reload one, but once it exists, whoever holds it can use it to buy fuel without a membership of their own. If someone in your household is already a member, a second membership for a second driver is usually unnecessary.
Worth flagging for Executive members: Costco Canada's own guidance indicates the annual 2% Executive Reward is not applied at the pump. The reward certificate can be redeemed in-warehouse toward a Shop Card, which can then be spent on fuel — so the benefit is real but indirect, and it should not be modelled as a straight 2% discount on gas. The calculator above deliberately excludes it.
05 / Common QuestionsCostco gas in Mississauga: quick answers
Which Costco locations in Mississauga have a gas station?
Two of the three. N Mississauga at 5900 Rodeo Drive and C Mississauga at 1570 Dundas Street East both have gas bars selling regular and premium. The S Mississauga warehouse at 3180 Laird Road does not sell fuel.
Does the Costco on Laird Road have gas?
No. S Mississauga (3180 Laird Rd) has a tire centre and propane but no gas bar. Drivers in Erin Mills, Sheridan and Clarkson have to reach Rodeo Drive or Dundas Street East, which is what makes the detour cost material on that side of the city.
Do you need a Costco membership to buy gas in Canada?
Yes, at the pump. The documented exception is the Costco Shop Card — only a member can buy or reload one, but anyone holding it can use it to pay for fuel without their own membership.
Does Costco Mississauga sell diesel?
Neither Mississauga gas bar currently sells diesel. Diesel drivers have no Costco fuel option in the city.
How much do you have to drive for a Costco membership to pay for itself on gas?
It depends entirely on your detour. At an 8¢/L price gap with a 10 km round-trip detour and a 9.0 L/100 km vehicle, a $55 Gold Star membership breaks even at roughly 12,900 km a year. Cut the detour to zero and that drops to about 7,600 km. Push the detour past about 25 km and no amount of annual mileage makes it pay. Use the calculator above with your own numbers.
Is Costco gas cheaper than other stations in Mississauga?
Usually at the posted price, but that is not the same as cheaper for you. Once the extra driving is priced in, the effective saving falls by several cents per litre — at a 10 km detour and 45 L fills, roughly 3.3¢/L of an 8¢/L gap is consumed by the drive itself.
What is verified and what isn't
The bottom line: If you already hold a Costco membership and live within a few kilometres of Rodeo Drive or Dundas Street East, filling up at Costco is close to free money — the spread lands almost entirely in your pocket. If you are weighing a $55 membership purely for fuel, and you live west of Erin Mills or along the lakeshore, the detour will eat most of the discount and the membership will not pay for itself on gas alone. Run your own detour number before you join.
